Preface: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Bates’s physical examination and history taking” is a well-known and widely used book in the USA and many parts of the world. Since its first edition in 1974, this work has been edited twelve times with the last version dating in 2017. The copyright holder was Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins ( 1974, 1979, 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007. Since 2009, the right holder is Wolters Klugers ( 2009, 2013, 2017). Translations have repeatedly been undertaken into several languages, of which French ( 10th <\/sup>and 11th American edition) in 2010, 2014 and, \u00a0Spanish in 2013 ( 11th <\/sup>American edition).<\/p>\n

In our knowledge, a systematic and complete guide is not available in Vietnamese. Some partial translation of books with similar content may exist, but not in conformity with the copyright regulations so that widespread and official use is not possible.<\/p>\n

As practicing physicians and medical teachers, we all acknowledge the foremost importance of careful history taking and thorough physical examination as the basis of any interaction with the patients.<\/p>\n

Mastering these abilities should, therefore, be acquired as early as possible and refined as often as one can. Bates, as a standard book, proves itself as an excellent candidate to provide our students with these skills. From a Vietnamese point of view and with the tendency to introducing more English in Vietnamese Medical schools, some may argue that medical students should learn the content directly in English so that a translation may not be necessary. Another argument that may be raised against translating medical books is that the translated version may rapidly lose its value due to quickly changing medical knowledge. As physicians and researchers, we are, however of the opinion that the fundamental, basic knowledge contained in “Bates” is quite solid and had withstood the test of time. Adaptations have been regularly adopted, but it seems that most of the changes concerned the layout, the restructuration, the rearrangement of the chapters for didactical reasons.\u00a0 The content was hardly affected. So once correctly performed, the translated version may remain valid for several years, maybe more than 15-20 years. Another argument is, at least for the next ten years to come, the English level of the medical students in Vietnam is not expected to improve abruptly. Their teachers should first be trained.<\/p>\n

The translation of “Bates” is also a response to a need, the one to know that the medical content taught in Vietnam has the same international standard. Mastering “Bates” may help increase self-confidence for Vietnamese Physicians in their daily activities while treating English speaking patients and when they are moving on an international dance floor.<\/p>\n

The Swiss-Vietnamese Medical Association (HELVIETMED) is composed of physicians versed both in English and Vietnamese, besides their competences\/ expertise in several medical fields. They were willing to launch and to fund the translation project. Their availability in time was limited. This disadvantage, however, could be overcome by including other experienced Vietnamese physicians with solid English knowledge from different medical faculties and hospitals in Vietnam, from the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Close collaboration with the School of Medicine of the Vietnam National University at Ho Chi Minh City allowed us to recruit a first competent staff to cover most of the chapters of the book. The additional staff could be enrolled from other faculties in Saigon for practical reasons. We preferred one junior first- translator and one senior-reviewer for each chapter. To promote young talent, \u00a0we also involved outstanding advanced students from medical faculties.<\/p>\n

The participation of numerous members of the Vietnamese Medical Community is an outstanding aspect of this project. We have been able to demonstrate that knowledge and commitment can be mobilized; a robust network can be built up in preparation for other meaningful projects in the future.<\/p>\n
